Somewhere in law school they must teach you the difference between a plea bargain and amnesty. I’m no lawyer and I know that much – they are two different things.
But in the faltering debates over several proposed Campaign Promises or Immigration Bills there has an illogical cry from conservatives that they do not want to give amnesty to law-breakers. Yes, the various propiosals would relieve law-breakers, that is illegal aliens who got here by hook or crook. But they do NOT offer any form of true amnesty.
Picture this: They would come forward, admit they don't belong here, be found guilty, have to pay a hefty fine and undergo a form of probation very appropriate for their crime. We would have to know where they were at all times, have a chance to thoroughly screen out those who committed crimes here or had dangerous backgrounds, and require them to work at all times, and learn English and American civics. (They might even have ended up knowing more about our nation’s government and history than many of us know. And contributed much to our economy.) Eventually they could become citizens -- or get lost.
They would be foolish not to come forward, because life would be unbearable if they didn't. They wouldn't be able to work – and if they were caught they'd get tossed out summarily. Fair enough. BTW those who had been here a while and have American born family would have to step back into their former homeland and then present themselves again at the border.
That has been the gist of what has been debated, er, politically torn apart. Personally I thought Congress had been reading my mail, back when there seemed to be hope of a solution. I could not have agreed more with the package they were debating -- which I hoped (foolish me) they would approve in some form or other. All they could accomplish was to prove that Congress could screw up a one-car Washington funeral!
This could have helped the poor Congress, with approval rating in the low teens, and George W. Bush too with approval rating in the high 20s though rising. Now, I thought, we could hunker down and come together to win the war! But it didn't, they didn't, and it didn't happen. Idiots!
